Jumpstyle
Jumpstyle is a dance and music genre mainly practiced in Europe, specifically the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and northern France. The dance is also called Jumpen (English word Jump + the Dutch suffix -en, meaning "to jump" or "jumping"). Jumpstyle also refers to a style of music to which Jumpstyle can be performed. Jumpstyle originated in 1997 Belgium. Jumpstyle is an off-shoot of the Gabber music and dance scene.
Performance
The modern dance associated with Jump, has evolved from the hakken-dance (known from gabber music which was popular in the 90s). The modern jump dance is also called skiën (lit. "skiing"). Performance by more than one person is the most popular. The legs are the most important part of the body in jumpstyle. It is performed by a series of forward and backward swings of the legs on the rhythm of the music. The most simple form of jumpstyle can be done like this.
- Swing your right leg forward twice. Your foot should be at the around the same height as your knee is.
- Then raise your left leg.
- Swing the left leg backwards. Your foot should again be at around the same height as your knee.
- Put your left leg back onto the ground, the left foot should be in front of the right foot.
- Repeat the circle
More difficult paces include those with turns, twists and so on.
Music
The music which accompanies Jumpstyle is an offspring of Happy Hardcore and Gabber. Its tempo is usually between 135 and 150 BPM. However, it cannot be seen as merely a slowed down version of gabber. It is characterized by a 909 kick drum used in a 4 to the floor beat. It also has influences from Chicago House and Hard dance.
Variations
Jumpstyle can be performed in various ways:
- Oldskool jump: Was based on the first move that was used in the dance called 'skieën'. Later a certain standard routine came that was a combination of kicking forwards and backwards both legs on the basslines; even later certain moves came such as a spin.
- Tekstyle: The jumper dances to French tek or Hardstyle. The jump is more sidewise than the others.
- Hardjump: This is the hardest variant of Jumpstyle. The basic step is different from the others and the jumper has to pitch hard on the ground.
- Freestyle: With this style, the 'jumper' does whatever he/she feels like; there are no specific restrictions of jumping and it usually involves a mix of Oldskool Jump & Hardjump & tekstyle.
- Duojump: Jumping with two (or more) people at the same time; usually the people performing the Duojump have practiced it before performing it, since they both do exactly the same routine and try to synchronize it as much as possible.
- Jumpjumpjump: Jumping in 3/4 time
Quotes on Jumpstyle
"Jumpstyle has become a lifestyle, like hip-hop or techno. For me, it’s the best party music around. There’s no other style that makes you go so crazy and forget about all your worries."
- Koen Bauweraerts (DJ Coone).

Electro music
Electro is a genre of electronic music directly influenced by the use of TR-808 and funk
records.Records in the genre typically have electronic sounds and some vocals are delivered in a deadpan, mechanical manner, often through a vocoder or other electronic distortion.
Definition and characteristics
Electro is an artistic musical form in the wide world of electronic music culture. With few exceptions, the definition of the electro sound is the use of drum machines as the rhythmic base of a track. Rhythm patterns tend to be electronic emulations of breakbeats, with syncopated kick drums, and usually a snare or clap accenting the downbeat.
Staccato, percussive rhythms dominate electro, with beats often provided by the Roland TR-808 drum machine. The TR-808, created in 1980, has an immediately recognizable sound, and remains popular in electro and other genres to the present day. Other electro instrumentation is generally all-electronic, favoring analog synthesis, funk-style bass lines, sequenced or arpeggiated synthetic riffs, and atonal sound effects all created with synthesizers. Heavy use of effects such as reverbs, delays, chorus or phasers along with synthetic ensemble strings or pad sounds emphasize the common science fiction or futuristic theme of the lyrics and/or music. Most electro is instrumental, but a common element is vocals processed through a vocoder. Additionally, speech synthesis may be used to create robotic or mechanical lyrical content. Some earlier electro features rapping, but that lyrical style has become less popular in the genre from the 1990s onward.
History
Bronx, NY based electro funk artist Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock" (1982) is one of the first electro records, using elements of Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express and "Numbers" (from Kraftwerk's Computer World album).
In 1983, Hashim (Jerry Calliste Jr) who created the influential electro funk tune "Al-Naafiysh (The Soul)" which became Cutting Record's first release in November of 1983." At the time Hashim was influenced by Man Parrish's "Hip Hop Be Bop", Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" and Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock".
Bambaataa and groups like Planet Patrol, Jonzun Crew, Mantronix, Newcleus and Juan Atkins' Detroit-based group Cybotron went on to influence the genres of Detroit techno, ghettotech, breakbeat, drum and bass and electroclash. Early producers in the electro genre (notably Arthur Baker, John Robie, Shep Pettibone, and the Latin Rascals) featured prominently in the Latin Freestyle (or simply "Freestyle") movement of the early and mid-1980s. Baker and Pettibone enjoyed robust careers well into the house era, and both eluded the "genre trap" to successfully produce mainstream artists.
Contemporary electro
Although the early 1980s were electro's heyday in the mainstream, it enjoyed renewed popularity in the late 1990s with artists such as Drexciya, Anthony Rother, DMX Krew, Mr Velcro Fastener and Dopplereffekt and DJs such as Dave Clarke. The continued interest in electro, though influenced to a great degree by Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles and New York styles, has primarily taken hold in Europe with electro club nights becoming commonplace again. The scene still manages to support hundreds of electro labels, from the disco electro of Clone Records, to the b-boy style of Breakin’ Records, and the electrofunk of Citinite.
A new branch of electro, Skweee, has risen over the last couple of years from Scandinavian countries such as Sweden and Finland, hence its first name "Scandinavian Funk". The outlets and artists of Skweee are still mostly limited to Scandinavia.

Hardstyle Shuffle
Hardstyle, in the United Kingdom sometimes referred to as hardbass, is a genre of electronic dance music that is closely related to hardcore and hard trance. Being a fusion of both hard trance and gabber, hardstyle is grouped in the hard dance section. Its sound is usually characterized by a four to the floor kick beat and an off-beat gabber style bass line, hard trance like synth stabs and sweeps and miscellaneous samples. Tracks often feature excessive reverb and/or other effects, breakdowns and occasionally small breakbeat sections. The average tempo is between 130 and 150 bpm, around 30 slower than nu style gabber.
Type of hardstyles
Hardstyle scenes can be found in various countries around the world. As with many formative sub-genres, the hardstyle category is itself split into several subcategories, such as:
- Dutch Hardstyle (Also known as early hardstyle)- Typically harder and darker than other hardstyle, mostly known for its hard off-beat reverse bass line, wicked kicks, dirty vocals and soft synths.
- Italian Hardstyle - More serious, usually has a bigger melodic breakdown and typically 'gangsta'-themed lyrics. The synths are much harder than dutch hardstyle.
- Nu-Style - Usually a softer bass line than normal hardstyle, mashed out with samples and lower use of reverse bass and/or reverb. The kick is often filtered and distorted to create a grungey overdriven bass drive. Melodies are emphasized, and put more into focus. In this type of Hardstyle, it seems Dutch Hardstyle is more Hard-dance influenced using more flat kicks and more commercial vocals. Italian Nu-Style seems to follow the typical Hardstyle more, still using reversed basslines and extremely rough synth.
One major event group in the hardstyle scene is Q-dance, arranging massive events in football stadiums, sports grounds, public arenas and airports.
Hardstyle Formula
The general way in which a Hardstyle song is ordered can be compared to reading a book. The formula looks like this: Intro [May in include vocals] - Beat pick up/Hasten - Beat Break [Similar to the rising action in a story] - Climax [the best part of the song where the beat and the bass play together] - Conclusion [the song will either trail off of the climax or go back to the original intro beat]
Mainstream Hardstyle is generally identified with a heavy kick combined with a "punch" and a bass "boom" on the down beat. This pattern generally goes with a soft synth or lead pattern that repeats. Another characteristic of Hardstyle is the usage of triplets throughout the song.
Popularity
Hardstyle is popular Europe wide, especially in its home lands such as the Netherlands and Germany, but its also popular among countries where the "hard dance" scene is big - such as Russia, the U.K, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland etc. Hardstyle is also hugely popular in Australia and some Asian countries such as Malaysia because of the "Melbourne Shuffle" In Australia hardstyle was first seen in underground clubs, and has started to spread to Sydney and Brisbane and even overseas to Malaysia and Brunei over the past seven years. Norway, Denmark and Sweden are also going with the flow!
Melbourne Shuffle
Melbourne Shuffle footwork is based in Celtic dance, in particular Irish Dance [1]. There has been a large Celtic population in Melbourne since the gold rush era, mostly from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Iberia/Spain and Gaul/France.
The traditional jig (gigue) and reel music to Celtic dance are essentially melody loops. The melody spread over 4,8,16 bars would usually be repeated or looped 4 times, then there would be a change of tunes going through the same loop process. Often getting faster with each repeat.
This suited the new digital loop structure of electronic dance music of the time, acid, techno, psytrance, perfectly.
Most girls in Melbourne attended recreational dance classes from when they were 6 years old. It was as common as kids playing sports in Melbourne.
Celtic dance is the basis for tap dance and was introduced into New York by Irish immigrants in the 1800's. Tap is part of the standard repertoire of dance classes, especially Shirley Temple styled tap for younger dancers.
Classical ballet is the other main dance stream in dance classes. Melbourne has all the major dance universities and colleges of Australia, the Australian Ballet was founded in and is still based Melbourne. So dancers from around the country moved to Melbourne for dance studies. They also loved dance parties, as you would expect.
Timeline
Late 1980s to early 1990s
The Melbourne shuffle begins to emerge as a distinct dance, incorporating more hand movement than previous styles. Early footage of the style exists from a night on the 31st of August 1991 at the Sarah Sands Hotel in Melbourne. Techno music was gradually replaced with trance music and house music[citation needed].
Mid to late 1990s
A number of videos documenting the style during this era exist as the style increased in popularity[3]. There are many variations of this dance but the main heel to toe movement remained the key motion giving it the term "the Melbourne shuffle".
2000 - Present
In 2006 with the emergence of YouTube, dancers internationally now contribute to the Shuffle online, posting their own versions and learning from others.
Dancing
Today known as "shuffling" to the Melbourne locals, the name "Melbourne shuffle" has been derived from overseas DJs, party goers, visitors and the media trying to describe this phenomenon. The Age referred to it as looking like "a cross between the chicken dance and a foot stomping robot" to the untrained eye, but locals have simply called it the "shuffle" since 1992.
Some dancers sprinkle talcum powder on the floor beneath their feet to help them glide more easily, some including 360 degree spins or jumps into their moves.
Media
The Melbourne shuffle dance style has remained relatively underground since its birth in the late 80s and early 90s. The term "Melbourne shuffle" was recorded in the media when Sonic Animation's Rupert Keiller was interviewed by rage, an all night Australian music TV show. The interviewer asked Rupert what his unique style of dance was and the reply was "the Melbourne Shuffle". In December of 2002 The Age, an Australian newspaper, made mention of the term in a front page article, attempting to illustrate what the popular Melbourne Shuffle was for the first time to the mainstream public.
The shuffle has spread to Malaysia and in Brunei and there have been "Shuffle Competitions" and "Shuffle Meet ups" held in Malaysia and Brunei.
Shufflers have taken their art form and self-expressive dance style overseas and are a regular sight to be seen at rave parties in the UK, Germany, Malaysia and also Thailand, where shufflers can be seen shuffling on the beaches of Koh P hang Ngan during the Full Moon Beach Party. The internet has also been a factor in spreading knowledge and interest in the shuffle.
A documentary on the topic entitled Melbourne Shuffler was in production during 2004-2005 and was recently released in late 2005 on DVD. - Another huge contributor to the fame and popularity of the Melbourne Shuffle is Youtube. Every shuffler and shuffle crew found themseslves able to support the Melbourne Shuffle and show off their own style and moves, these videos captured everyone's attention.
